Mexico-New York contains some of the emblematic images of the twentieth century, the work of three great masters of contemporary photography: Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans. The book has been published to coincide with an exhibition in the Museum of the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City that freely reconstructs the historic showing of the same three photographers in the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1935. The Bellas Artes show is part of a series of homages to Alvarez Bravo, who passed away recently at the age of one hundred. The texts in this book offer a critical analysis of the photographs they accompany, placing them in their historical context and evoking their vast universal resonance.
